DESCRIPTION:

Mount Analogue was a project created for an imagined interactive instalation for Arc’teryx. The instlation engages with participants by allowing them to “draw” and create the mountains with the movement of their hand.

After a trip to Desolation Wilderness near Southlake Taho in Northern California, Andrew found a lidar scan of lake aloha on usgs and converted it into a pointcloud. Lidar technology uses lasers to reconstruct the surfance of an object by measuring the time it takes for a laser to be sent and reflected back to the sensor. This data comes back as point positions that can then be visualized in a cloud of points.

The title, Mount Analogue is a reference to the René Daumal novel with the same name. The novel is about a group of mountaineers who go on an expedition to locate a mountain that is invisible to the outside world and can only be located through the application of obscure knowledge and scientific methods.
